Disarming Whiteness Course

from $300.00

A 6-week intermediate-to-advanced series for participants who are white, facilitated by 2 white members of our co-facilitation team. Through this series, participants will:

  1. Identify 3 social armaments that are commonly used to uphold a global pattern of racial inequity that is deeply informed by white supremacy and anti-Blackness.

  2. Predict when these social armaments will be taken up in organizations to protect the racial status quo, and how they will function—many times in very subtle ways.

  3. Explore 5 roles whites must play to share the burden of bringing about a more racially equitable workplace and world.

  4. Practice tools to disarm the social armaments of whiteness, destabilize the racially inequitable status quo, and bring about a more just world for all.

WHAT’S INCLUDED: This 6-week online series is offered in two formats:

  • Self-Guided/Asynchronous: A welcome packet the week before the course opens, then for the 6-week duration of the course, new content drops each week (videos, self-reflection questions, activities, tools, tips, and facilitated group discussion threads where you can interact with other cohort participants, and the facilitators).

  • Live: Six 2-hour live online group learning and coaching sessions via Zoom, six self-guided pre work assignments (30 minutes each), weekly access to support and feedback from one of the facilitators, and access to a postwork website full of resources and tools.

RECOMMENDATION: We recommend attending with at least one fellow white person from your organization or community, so you can learn together, and plan to engage in internal organizing and intervening together, back in your organization.

PREREQUISITE: Participants will be best set up to take this course after completing a racial equity 101 course (e.g. Racial Equity Institute, Peoples’ Institute For Survival and Beyond, Social Justice Training Institute, Courageous Conversations About Race, or other comparable courses).

COST: Sliding scale $300-$950. A portion of proceeds go directly to BIPOC-led BIPOC-accountable organizations doing community organizing and development for racial justice. In 2023, funds went to Communities In Partnership, in East Durham, NC and MEASURE in Austin, TX.

REFUNDS: Unfortunately we cannot provide refunds but if you cannot attend, you can defer your ticket for use in any future series, or transfer it to someone else.

UPCOMING COHORTS TO CHOOSE FROM:

  • Fall 2024 self-guided/asynchronous (no set meeting times): Welcome packet on Sep 30th, and new self-guided content the weeks of Oct 7 through Nov 18th.

Testimonials

"Honestly, Disarming Whiteness is the hardest thing I will do in my entire life. These issues are foundational and deeply embedded in our culture. I will always keep in mind the tools, frameworks, and analogies we covered in this course." -recent Disarming Whiteness™ course graduate

I would recommend attending Disarming Whiteness to anyone who wants to gain not only understanding but also practical tools to help advance racial equity. This course focuses on training and building muscle so that our behaviors effectively have a positive impact on rebalancing racial power dynamics.

I highly recommend Disarming Whiteness to anyone who is on or exploring an antiracist journey, and to anyone who doesn't know enough about the work to determine if they should be doing "it" but know they want to help build a more equitable world. It was empowering and welcoming to be in a room with participants of all gender identities, from states and countries across the world, at various stages of their journey and in vastly different careers. Clayton and Audrey made it really easy to learn, to engage, and to want to grow.

“I would recommend attending Disarming Whiteness to anyone who, like me, cares about anti-racism, and is struggling with how to effectively organize with other white people. Disarming Whiteness helped me re-evaluate my relationships with other white people, and how I distance myself and avoid meaningfully building relationships and engaging with other white people. It's given me tools to re-engage, notice what I'm feeling, and notice what agenda I'm trying to achieve in any given moment.” - Ben, Public Health Communications

“If, like me, your work requires that you work across lines of difference or that you design and implement systems that speak to the societal inequities that center whiteness, this six week course will prove an incredibly useful experience. Expect thought partnership across fields, new and reframed skills from previous learnings, and opportunities to reflect on your practices and personal frame. If you are willing to confront yourself and the ways you have failed as a white person, there will be no shortage of learning. This course helped me reset a working relationship with a Black employee, redesign a disciplinary system, and revise the vision and working style for one of my reporting teams.” - Dana, Assistant Principal of Culture

“I would recommend attending Disarming Whiteness to anyone committed to exploring their own landscape and the ways we perpetuate inequity. As a DEI professional, I find it essential to continue to find communities of practice and this one was supportive, well-facilitated, and full of great resources.” -recent Disarming Whiteness™ course graduate

“I would recommend attending Disarming Whiteness to anyone who, like me, cares about racial equity and the work we need to do to integrate these change efforts into our lives and places of employment. When we center the most marginalized, we address all concerns”. - Katie, Sr. DIB Program Manager

“As a retired white person with a need to get out of a rut, I was looking for a way to engage with other like-minded change agents on the topic of race.  I was not disappointed as I learned much about myself, and more about our white supremacy problem.  I took away memorable conversations and a series of tools and perspectives that I am able to deploy as I seek to bring about change in myself and our society.”  -recent Disarming Whiteness™ course graduate

“One sign Disarming Whiteness is the right thing for you right now is that you are feeling the need to refresh your commitment to antiracist work, and looking for a group of folks who are committed to doing this work together as white folks. If you struggle to make space for your own personal learning and accountability in your busy calendar, this will help you hold space and take consistent action.”  -recent Disarming Whiteness™ course graduate
